Grant-Making Philosophy

The Board of Directors of the Onyx Foundation set policy and delegate authority to the staff for the foundation’s grant-making and operations. Program officers in the United States explore opportunities to pursue the foundation’s goals both nationally and internationally, while formulating strategies and recommending proposals for funding.

As a part of our mission to strengthen democratic values by encouraging mobilization efforts from below that improve quality of life, the Onyx Foundation seeks to provide grants to both solicited and unsolicited projects at this time. Our current priorities include funding community and workplace-based organizations actively involved in organizing around social and political issues.

While our financial resources are modest in comparison with society’s needs, we are open to funding projects of a broad variety: from workers’ centers to strike committees; from student groups to women’s organizations; from ecological campaigns to immigrant defense work; from anti-racist organizing to youth and senior citizen service programs. If your project is in need of funding and is in agreement with the mission of the Onyx Foundation, contact us regarding our grant-making opportunities.

We are willing to consider original inquiries that are well researched and thought out, possessing a thorough description of your organization or network and the educational or cultural initiative at hand. The applicant for the grant must have at least two other associates with equal evidence of expertise, leadership, or potential (expressed in resumes attached to the application). Please illustrate evidence of a record of public service, research and writing, financial planning, and most importantly, philosophical conviction.
